Crossing Holograms
Every time a new test or inspection technology emerges, some are surprised, convinced that all of the best ideas had already been tried. Another unlikely source has proposed a revolutionary approach. As reported on Economist.com, a company based in Cambridge, England, has a technique that stores two holograms on a single piece of photosensitive material. In one of its first applications, the company is using the technique to detect an overabundance of impurities (water, in this case) in airline fuels. True image comparisons and 3D analysis instead of the 2D used in automated optical, X-ray, and other inspection are sure to follow. This one bears watching.
